Pearl Valley was the second Jack Nicklaus Signature course to open in South Africa when it was officially inaugurated in a match between the Golden Bear and another golfing great, Gary Player, in 2003. Laid out within a 500-acre residential estate in the Cape Winelands, Pearl Valley is one of the most visually pleasing courses imaginable, with brilliant white river sand bunkers that contrast sharply against the varying emerald hues of the fairways and greens.
The championship course has been ranked among the top ten courses in South Africa by Golf Digest magazine every year since 2006 up to and including 2015 and named the Best Conditioned Golf Course in the Western Cape for 2010, 2011, 2012/2013 and again for 2014/2015 by Golf Digest magazine. Awarded the Five Star Experience Award by Compleat Golfer for six consecutive years.
The home of the SA Open for three consecutive years in 2007, 2008 and 2009 provides you with a stern yet enjoyable golfing test. During the 2008 South African Open, 2007 US Masters Champion Trevor Immelman was full of praise saying, “the course is in incredible condition, it really is. That’s the way I expected the course to be, to a high standard, and they have always turned out a fantastic course, for the members day-in day-out. I really feel like these fairways; they are some of the best, if not the best, that I’ve ever played on.”
The Famous Holes at Pearl Valley
Pearl Valley has two signature holes, 4th and 13th, both offering majestic views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. The 4th hole is as challenging, with limited margin for error as you need to cross the creek three times en route to a tricky green. This par 5 is regularly listed as one of the best par 5’s in South Africa, optimising the ideals of ‘risk and reward’. The 13th hole is a daunting par 3. As the water cuts from the right and a green side bunker waits, one is mesmerised by the cautious tee shot. This hole tests both your ball striking and your nerve.
The 230-yard par three 3rd is also a memorable hole on the front nine with water cutting in on the right side of the putting surface and a greenside bunker lurking to catch wayward tee shots.
Facilities at Pearl Valley
With panoramic views of the magnificent mountain ranges surrounding the area, the clubhouse is the social hub of the Pearl Valley estate community, providing a stylishly relaxed setting for golfers, residents and visitors. The spacious terrace and bar overlooks the 9th & 18th greens and are the perfect venues to enjoy one of Pearl Valley’s many spectacular sunsets. The clubhouse also offers a restaurant, a halfway house, a well stocked Golf Shop, and comfortable change room facilities – all encapsulated by friendly and professional service.
