Set in a beautiful area of North Cumbria, and boasting unrivalled, panoramic views of the Lake District, the south of Scotland and the Pennines, Brampton golf club could not have more idyllic scenery to accompany a fine round of golf. It was originally designed by esteemed golf course architect James Braid, and, measuring 6407 yards from the competition tees, it has a par of 72. The land on which James Braid built his course was naturally undulating, and it’s safe to say that Braid used that to his advantage when designing Brampton.

The course isn’t long at a tad over 6,400 yards, but it plays its length because the ground tends to get damp. After all, we are in the Lake District. This lovely course in the county’s northern reaches starts with a downhill par-3, before turning back via a par 4 where you really mustn’t stray above the hole, then another a strong par 4 backed by pines that give it a real Gleneagles flavour.

You cross the road after the sharp uphill dogleg 6th whereupon scores of beautiful-looking holes open up before you.

Our team especially like the short par four 8th, with its elevated tee. It tempts the big hitters to have a crack at the green.

The 13th and well-bunkered par-3 14th offer lovely views out over Talkin Tarn, while the steeply uphill par-5 17th demands another long drive up to a bowl near the crest to avoid the deflating sight of your ball retracing a disheartening percentage of its yardage.

Cumbria isn’t golf course Mecca, but Brampton should be played alongside the mighty Silloth on Solway and the lesser-known links at Seascale. The Lake District is a really beautiful area and we thoroughly recommend a stay in the area. If you do stay in the heart of the Lake District, take the opportunity to play Windermere Golf Club, the real “Small Gleneagles”.

The recently enlarged and refurbished clubhouse provides excellent service and facilities, catering for both members and guests alike.
