Babe Zaharias Golf Course is a public golf course that is proudly managed by the Tampa Sports Authority. Babe Zaharias Golf Course’s story begins in 1926 when the course was first opened in northwest Tampa as the Forest Hills Golf and Country Club. The original course had riding stables on the south property and was only surrounded by 10 homes. It also had a magnificent two-story clubhouse that included a ballroom.
Known in the Tampa Bay area as “The Babe”, located just 20 minutes from downtown in the tree-lined residential neighborhood of Forest Hills, The Babe measures a modest 6,244 yards, but should not be taken lightly. Although both nines are par-35, the backside sports four par-4s in excess of 400 yards, providing a challenging course for golfers of all skill levels. Take part in a true tradition of the Tampa Bay area and golf at The Babe. Tampa Golf Course, Driving Range, Lessons, Tampa Event Venue.
The front nine is called the “Babe” and the back nine is called the “George” in honor of Babe’s husband former professional wrestler George Zaharias. The 10th hole is affectionately called the “Big George.”
The course winds through a neighborhood in Carrollwood so houses and roads can come into play if you’re not on your game. Although it is not a real long course, you can find challenges along the way. There are four sets of tees ranging from just over 6000 yards to 4800 yards from the forward tees. Dog-legs both left and right, and some well placed water hazards, can make this course tough at times.
The signature hole is #16, a 453-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot up a tree-lined fairway with out-of-bounds stakes threatening both sides, then an approach shot as the fairway doglegs left to the green. You are going to need to be able to work the ball from right to left if your going to want a good chance at a birdie.
Hillsborough has a large number of golf courses that Babe Zaharias is competing with and the club had some issues beginning of 2018. But it seems that the Babe Zaharias Golf Course is safe.
