Domain of Petegem Castle
The castle grounds also contain the ruins of one of the oldest castles in Flanders. A charter of Charles the Bald, who visited in 864, indicates that the castle was inhabited by Frankish kings of the second dynasty. Later, the Petegem manor was sold to the Count of Flanders, who converted it into the so-called “Old Castle”. 1 kilometre downstream his wife founded the Abbey of St. Clara, also called Beaulieu, which stood there until the end of the 18th century. Its remains, which were artfully restored, can be seen from Course Kasteel.
The new castle was built in 1847 in a neo-classical and neo-Renaissance style on commission from Baron Auguste Pycke of Peteghem, a former officer in Napoleon’s army. Many of its paintings on canvas, framed in salon panelling, came from the Old Castle.
