The Golf de Cherbourg
If you had to remember a word to evoke the Golf de Cherbourg, it would not challenge the word “charm”. The charm of a beautiful site overlooking the harbor, the charm of the walk from in the middle of the wood, on gently rolling green fairways throughout the year.
Probably the most beautiful nine-hole course in Normandy, La Glacerie is in the village of La Verrerie overlooking Cherbourg and the sea. A virtually flat course but very wooded with narrow fairways and small but well defended greens. After being renovated between 2003 and 2011 a new rating has been established for 2012 : from the back tees SSS 71.6 and slope 145 while the course mesures 6318 yards for 18 holes. The trees all along the course and the bunkers situated at holes 2, 6 and 8 wait impatiently to claim any golf ball whose trajectory has not been perfectly calculated. The course is stunning, with wild rhododendron heavy with flowers in spring, and many different species of trees : birch, larch, for, pine, oak and ash… If you get there in the early morning, you might even sport the odd deer crossing the fairway.
If its length does not frighten, it offers some most interesting or even “provocative” technical and strategic challenges for all types of players.
