Established on the Old Barrack Hill on the outskirts of Pembroke Dock, South Pembrokeshire Golf Club has been extended to a challenging golf course of 18 holes, with probably some of the best greens in the locality. It is an ideal base for exploring golf in West Wales in general and the Pembroke Peninsula in particular.
The openness of the South Pembrokeshire Golf Course can present some challenging shot-making in windy conditions, but equally in benign weather a good score can be achieved. As you walk the 3.6 miles around the course, just stop for a moment, and take-in the views that you just will not get on a parkland course, in particular on a perfect summers day.
The course measures 3.6 miles from the white tees, with four par 3’s, twelve par 4’s, and two par 5’s. The 5th hole and 15th holes are the two most difficult and challenging holes on the course.
The 5th hole(S.I. 2) is the club’s signature hole. From the back tee, this long par 4 measures 455 yards. An accurate tee shot is required if you wish to have a crack at the green with your approach. The second shot is not for the faint-hearted – a deep valley with trouble in front and to the right. A bold and commited shot is needed if you want to make par.
The 15th hole(S.I. 1) is a par 4 of 410 yards from the back tee with a slight dog-leg from right to left. If you have a good round going, this hole can wreck the card. The problems begin with the tee shot – the fairway slopes sharply left to right all the way to the green with trouble on both sides. If you find the fairway, the second shot is a blind approach from a hanging lie. The green has a slope running through the middle, which can make putting a bit tricky if you’re on the wrong level. If you secure par here – give yourself a pat on the back.
