Now approaching 40 years old Winter Hill Golf Club has matured into an interesting and challenging test of golf. This is not a course for simply teeing up and testing modern day equipment – although a number of holes do require long drives to leave any chance of making the green in regulation. The emphasis at Winter Hill is on accuracy rather than length, and the ability to get into position to leave an easy shot to the green is important.
The Greenkeeping team takes pride in ensuring the course is in excellent condition all year round. The greens and fairways are regarded as some of the best in the region.
An ongoing program of investment in course improvement is aimed at making sure the course continues to improve.
A location of outstanding natural beauty provides an environment that means golfers not at the peak of their form will have an enjoyable round.
The course has been developed on a gentle east-facing hillside and is arguably one of the most attractive courses in the Thames Valley. The panoramic views over the river at Cookham are breathtaking and on a clear day you can see as far as Ascot and beyond. In addition, the fairways, tees and greens are playable through most weather conditions, thanks to the course’s good natural drainage.
Winter Hill’s signature hole is the 15th, a par 3 which requires a well-struck short iron to carry over the valley and nestle close to the flag. The well-guarded green slopes away sharply on three sides. All in all, this course is a real challenge. The changes in elevation test club selection; on some holes you are forced to play approach shots into greens which lie as much as 50′ below you.
